What is a VM template

Clusters with VMware vSphere, oVirt, OpenStack, Basis Dynamix, VMware vCloud Director, and Yandex Cloud providers are created using virtual machine images. In the Shturval platform they are called provider templates. A template contains the core information Shturval providers use to deploy virtual machines in the virtualization platform, namely:

  • operating system and version. Supported operating systems in the Shturval platform are listed on Supported operating systems;
  • disk size limit (created virtual machines cannot have a smaller disk than specified in the source VM).

A template does not store information about the source VM resources (CPU, RAM).

You can create several VM templates on different operating systems if needed. VM templates are the basis for InfraMachineTemplates from which nodes in groups are created. One VM template can be used to configure different InfraMachineTemplates.

VM templates added to a provider instance are available on the InfraMachineTemplate tab on the Control Plane group configuration page and the Worker node group configuration page.
